Information

Prohibited Sign was floated as a concept for an emoji or Unicode symbol that would show the universal red circle with a diagonal slash to mean “not allowed.” During the mid-2010s emoji expansion era, people discussed a generic prohibition mark that could stand alone or conceptually act as an overlay to negate other symbols, echoing how real-world signage combines the slash with pictograms (e.g., no smoking, no dogs). Although a visually similar “prohibited/no” emoji exists, a distinct, general-purpose Prohibited Sign—especially one intended to modify other emojis—was never adopted as a separate, officially approved emoji. Informal community conversations sometimes referenced the old text character U+20E0 (Combining Enclosing Circle Backslash) as inspiration, but that combining mark never saw broad emoji-style support or consistent rendering in modern apps.

Supporters envisioned strong use cases: quick “no,” “forbidden,” “banned,” “blocked,” or “don’t” messages; moderation cues in chat; and meme-friendly “nope” reactions. Concept art and mockups typically showed a bold red ring with a 45° slash, white or transparent interior, and a slight gloss or flat material look—close to what users expected on iOS or other platforms—while an overlay idea would keep the center transparent to sit atop another icon. Despite interest, a dedicated, composable Prohibited Sign didn’t move forward, likely because the existing no/ban emoji already covered most everyday needs and because reliable overlay behavior across fonts and platforms was hard to guarantee. As a result, the notion remains a notable “almost” from the proposal-era discussions, remembered whenever users ask for a universal way to negate any emoji.

Emoji History The emoji code/ image log of changes.

  1. This emoji was one of the "suggested emojis" the Unicode group unveiled in June 2014 [article], however, it has been, and still is, up to the companies who support emoji in their operating systems to provide not only images but also an algorithm to replace the emoji code into the emoji image.
