Regional Indicator Symbol Letter Z

Information

Regional Indicator Symbol Letter Z (U+1F1FF) is one of the 26 regional indicator characters used to build country flag emoji. Each flag is made by placing two regional indicators in sequence to match an ISO 3166-1 alpha-2 code; this character supplies the 'Z' half of pairs such as NZ, ZA, ZW, CZ, AZ, UZ, KZ, TZ, DZ, BZ, MZ, and SZ. When combined successfully, platforms render the pair as a single flag glyph; otherwise the two symbols remain separate. On its own, it is a visible emoji-style character that typically appears as a boxed letter Z rather than a national flag. It does not join with other characters via ZWJ, and it is not affected by skin tone modifiers or variation selectors.

On Apple platforms (iOS and macOS), a lone regional indicator usually shows as a square or rounded-square letter glyph, and supported pairs form a full-color flag emoji. Unsupported or nonstandard pairs normally display as two individual regional indicator symbols instead of a flag. This character lives in the Enclosed Alphanumeric Supplement block and has the Emoji property, so it is commonly rendered with emoji presentation by default. It is not a general-use letter for writing; use the Latin letter Z for text. Developers should treat it as an emoji component for flag composition and expect platform-dependent fallback when the intended flag is unavailable.

Definition
