The male sign (U+2642, β) is a long-established Unicode symbol representing the male gender and the astronomical symbol for Mars. In emoji systems it is both a standalone symbol and a key component used to specify gendered variants of certain person or activity emojis. It supports presentation selectors: U+FE0E forces a text-style glyph, while U+FE0F requests an emoji-style, colorful glyph; without a selector, platforms may choose either style. On Apple iOS and most platforms, β displays as a visible symbol; with FE0F it typically appears as a colored emoji-style icon, while without it you may see a monochrome text symbol depending on the font.
Technically, β participates in Zero Width Joiner (ZWJ) sequences to create explicitly male variants of gender-neutral people and roles, using the pattern [base person/activity emoji] + ZWJ (U+200D) + MALE SIGN (U+2642) + FE0F. When the sequence is recognized, the renderer shows a single unified βmanβ emoji for that activity or role, and the male sign itself does not appear; if unsupported, the components may display separately, revealing the β symbol after the base emoji. The character does not take skin tone modifiers; any skin tone in such sequences is applied to the base person emoji, not to the male sign. Outside emoji composition, β is widely used in science, medicine, and culture to denote male sex or Mars, and it normally appears visibly as a standalone symbol rather than being invisible or control-like.
