The Girls Symbol was an often-suggested emoji or Unicode pictogram concept discussed during the midโ2010s expansion era, but it was never approved as an official character. It aimed to label the category of โgirlsโ in a signage-style wayโsimilar to restroom icons or youth program markersโrather than depict an individual person. Supporters wanted a compact visual tag for girls-only activities, school clubs, kids mode, and girl power messages in chat and social posts. In fan mockups and concept art, it was commonly imagined as a simplified child silhouette with a dress and pigtails inside a colored circle, frequently pink or magenta, or as a small variant related to the female sign. Despite periodic interest in community wishlists, no major vendor shipped a standardized glyph and the idea remained unencoded.
The concept overlapped heavily with existing emoji such as Girl (๐ง), Womenโs Room (๐บ), and the Female Sign (โ), which reduced its distinct utility. Designers and community feedback also raised concerns about age labeling, cultural stereotypes (for example, dresses or pink color cues), and the challenge of crafting an inclusive, globally recognizable glyph. Unicode tends to avoid narrowly scoped signage duplicates, and that general principle worked against this proposalโs chances. In internet culture, the idea persisted in custom sticker packs, fonts, and server badges labeled Girls Only, but these assets were platform-specific and not part of the standard emoji set. Had it appeared in an Apple-style set, it likely would have followed iOS iconography with a rounded badge, strong contrast, and a neutral or system color palette rather than bright pink, minimizing stereotype cues while echoing established signage design.

Emoji History The emoji code/ image log of changes.
This emoji was one of the "suggested emojis" the Unicode group unveiled in June 2014 [article], however, it has been, and still is, up to the companies who support emoji in their operating systems to provide not only images but also an algorithm to replace the emoji code into the emoji image.
