Tag Latin Small Letter A is a Plane 14 tag character (code point U+E0061) used inside emoji tag sequences. It is not a standalone emoji and is normally invisible by itself; it functions only as part of a larger sequence of tag characters that follow a base emoji. In current emoji practice, these tag letters most notably come after the Black Flag emoji (U+1F3F4) to encode subdivision flags via a string of tag letters, which is then terminated by the Cancel Tag character (U+E007F). If the sequence is recognized, it produces a specific flag; if not, platforms typically show just the base Black Flag and ignore the hidden tag letters.
Historically, the Tags block was associated with language tag mechanisms, but in emoji it enables encoded identifiers such as the well-supported flags for England (gbeng), Scotland (gbsct), and Wales (gbwls) using tag letters. Because Tag Latin Small Letter A is a default-ignorable formatting character, it does not render a visible glyph and may appear to do nothing unless part of a valid tag sequence. On Apple/iOS, individual tag characters remain invisible, while supported sequences like the subdivision flags render as distinct emoji; unsupported combinations fall back to showing only the Black Flag.
