Information

Black Pennant refers to a flag-like Unicode symbol concept that has been discussed in the same broad space as early emoji and pictographic symbol candidates, but it never became a commonly supported, officially approved emoji on modern emoji keyboards. Unlike the widely recognized waving flag emoji characters, a standalone black pennant was not adopted as a standard RGI emoji sequence and is not available as an Apple/iOS emoji. It is best understood as a proposed or symbol-chart-style pictograph idea rather than a mainstream emoji character.

The intended meaning would likely have overlapped with sports banners, team spirit, victory signals, rally flags, warning markers, and dark or oppositional symbolism. A black pennant could also suggest pirate imagery, protest culture, anarchist or anti-authoritarian flags, racing signals, or an ominous β€œred flag but darker” internet joke. People may have wanted it because pennants are visually distinct from rectangular flags and are useful for fandoms, schools, teams, games, competitions, and symbolic online reactions.

In concept art or proposal-style imagery, Black Pennant would most likely have appeared as a small triangular or tapering black flag attached to a vertical pole, similar to a sports pennant or signal flag. If Apple had designed it as an emoji, it probably would have used a glossy or lightly shaded black fabric shape with a simple pole, matching the rounded, dimensional style of older iOS emoji flags; however, no official Apple emoji design for this candidate is known. Its closest visual relatives are the black flag, white flag, triangular flag, pirate flag, and general flag symbols, but Black Pennant remains a largely historical or conceptual entry rather than a living emoji.

Emoji History The emoji code/ image log of changes.

  1. This emoji was one of the "suggested emojis" the Unicode group unveiled in June 2014 [article], however, it has been, and still is, up to the companies who support emoji in their operating systems to provide not only images but also an algorithm to replace the emoji code into the emoji image.
