Tag Latin Small Letter R is a Unicode tag character (U+E0072) from the Tags block on Plane 14. It is a default-ignorable format character, not a visible letter, and it typically appears invisible by itself across platforms. In emoji systems, tag letters are used to form emoji tag sequences, most notably appended to the Waving Black Flag (U+1F3F4) and terminated by CANCEL TAG (U+E007F) to identify certain flags. Outside of such sequences, this character has no visible effect and should not be treated as a standalone emoji.
In current emoji practice, tag characters enable specific flag renderings such as the subnational flags for England, Scotland, and Wales, which are recognized on many platforms; the letter “r” itself is not part of those three well-supported tags but may occur in other or experimental tag sequences. When a tag sequence is not recognized, most systems—including Apple iOS—fall back to displaying only the base emoji (e.g., a plain black flag), and the tag letters remain hidden. If displayed in isolation due to font or rendering issues, a missing glyph (tofu) placeholder may appear, but correctly implemented renderers keep it invisible. This character does not affect emoji presentation style, does not participate in ZWJ sequences, and is unrelated to skin tone modifiers.
Historically, the Tags block was introduced for language tagging and later repurposed for emoji tag sequences; in modern usage it is primarily seen in these flag-related contexts. Developers should treat Tag Latin Small Letter R as an invisible, default-ignorable component that only has meaning within a well-formed emoji tag sequence and should avoid exposing it directly in user interfaces or text content.
