Tag Latin Small Letter Y is a Unicode tag character (U+E0079) from the Tags block on Plane 14. It is a default ignorable code point that is normally invisible and does not appear as a standalone symbol. In emoji systems, it is used only as part of emoji tag sequences, most notably after the WAVING BLACK FLAG (U+1F3F4) to encode subdivision flags via letter tags and then terminated by the CANCEL TAG (U+E007F). Outside of a valid tag sequence, it is typically ignored by renderers and produces no visible output.
On modern platforms, including Apple iOS and macOS, tag letters like this one are hidden during normal rendering. Only a very small number of subdivision flag sequences are widely supported (for example, the flags for England, Scotland, and Wales), and unsupported tag combinations usually fall back to showing the base black flag without the intended subdivision rendering. The letter y itself is not part of those three commonly supported sequences, but it may occur in other subdivision or private tag strings that will remain invisible if not recognized. Tag letters differ from Regional Indicator Symbols used for country flags and do not use ZWJ or variation selectors; they function as invisible modifiers embedded in the sequence. Developers should note that some text engines may drop or normalize tag characters on copy/paste, and fonts generally provide no visible glyph, which can result in silent failure or black-flag fallback when sequences are not fully supported.
