People reach for it as a louder, flashier stand‑in for the asterisk: for emphasis, as a decorative bullet, or to punctuate captions with a little kapow. It excels at comic‑style self‑censorship (what the ✳️ was that), ironic hype (“Just folded laundry ✳️ limited edition ✳️”), and retro UI highlights in bios and threads. You’ll also catch it moonlighting as a faux snowflake, a mini compass rose, or a bike‑wheel joke—basically anywhere a tidy geometric burst feels right. When ✨ is too dreamy and * is too quiet, this one brings neat chaos with a wink.
It’s the eight‑spoked asterisk—the starbursty cousin of the plain old *. Visually, think a compact blast of eight evenly spaced spokes, radiating like a retro “NEW!” sticker without the price tag.
On Apple/iOS it appears as a bright, minty‑green burst with rounded tips and a soft gradient, the kind of pop that makes text feel like it’s yelling politely. It’s instantly recognizable as the green one, not the orange eight‑pointed star or the glittery ✨ sparkles.

Emoji History The emoji code/ image log of changes.
This emoji was part of the proprietary / non-standardized emoji set first introduced by Japanese carriers like Softbank. These emojis became part of the Apple iPhone starting in iOS 2.2 as an unlockable feature on handsets sold in English speaking countries.
In iOS 5 / OSX 10.7, the underlying code that the Apple OS generates for this emoji was changed.
The code generated for this emoji was changed slightly in iOS 7 / OSX 10.9 (a variation selector was added) advising the OS to display character emoji style instead of black and white text when available. We don't mind Apple, thank you! We just love our emojis! [Sources 11438-emoji-var.pdf 13.7 Variation Selectors (unicode.org)]
