Tag Latin Small Letter L is a special non-printing Unicode tag character (U+E006C) from the Tags block used to build emoji tag sequences. It does not display as a visible "l" in normal text; by itself it is typically invisible, or on some older or limited renderers it may appear as a missing-glyph box. In emoji systems, tag letters are appended to the Black Flag (U+1F3F4) and terminated with Cancel Tag (U+E007F) to request specific subdivision flags, such as those for the United Kingdom; Tag Latin Small Letter L appears in the sequence for the flag of Wales (GB-WLS). Supported platforms that recognize these sequences, including iOS, render the intended flag; otherwise users will usually see just the black flag with the hidden tag characters ignored. The letter values correspond to ASCII letters mapped to tag code points, mirroring BCP 47 subtags like "eng", "sct", and "wls" used in these defined emoji tag sequences. Outside of those defined emoji tag sequences, this character has no effect on emoji styling and should not be used as a regular letter; it serves as a technical component for parsers and renderers. Historically, tag characters were designed for tagging or annotating text, but their practical use in modern Unicode is now almost entirely limited to emoji tag sequences.
